Pitcher Method Chit-Chat

Benefits of using the pitcher method for expressed breastmilk:

  • Fridge space: Instead of keeping multiple bottles in your fridge at all times, milk from each of the day's pumping sessions can be combined into one pitcher.
  • Less dishes: More bottles = more dishes, simple as that. (This is especially applicable for parents with multiples.)
  • Fat distribution: When you are mixing milk from multiple pumping sessions, it allows the fat content (which can vary between pumping sessions) to mix properly. This creates more balanced, even feedings.

What qualifies as a "pitcher"?

Any jar of any size. You could use a true pitcher, a mason jar, or even a normal baby bottle. The amount of milk you typically express during your pumping sessions should help you determine what size of container you will need to implement the pitcher method.
