What is antenatal colostrum collection?
Antenatal colostrum collection refers to the process of expressing and collecting colostrum prior to the birth of your baby. This can be done anytime after 36 weeks of pregnancy. It should be avoided prior to that because it could cause contractions.
Why would someone collect colostrum before birth?
There are several reasons why you might want to collect colostrum. If you are a high risk mama, anticipate separation from baby at birth, or know of oral ties or restrictions that may make breastfeeding difficult, you might find it helpful to have some colostrum on hand before baby arrives.
What materials do you need to collect colostrum?
- Collection syringes. I like the Haakaa Silicone Syringes.
- Your hands. Yes, that's really all you need.
